Breaking Free from the Weights that Hold Us Back
As we embark on our journey of faith, we’re reminded of the wise words of Hebrews 12:1: “Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” But what exactly are these weights that hinder us?
The Invisible Chains of Expectation
In 19th century England, women of wealth were bound by societal norms that dictated they wear clothing weighing up to forty pounds. These heavy, multiple layers of skirts not only restricted their movement but also made it nearly impossible to escape danger. Today, we may not wear physical weights, but we’re often shackled by our own or others’ expectations, our upbringing, and the siren call of consumerism.
The Courage to Challenge
Nineteenth-century women like Catherine Booth, who co-founded the Salvation Army with her husband William, dared to defy cultural norms. They bravely stepped into uncharted territories, making a significant impact on society. Others, like Annie Gordon and Nellie and Topsy Saunders, paid the ultimate price for their determination to follow God’s call, even if it meant going against the status quo.
The Four Walls of Our Comfort Zone
Too often, we women confine ourselves to the familiar walls of our homes, forgetting that we’re called to make a difference in the world. While raising children is a vital role, we mustn’t let it limit our influence. We’re summoned to follow God into the unknown, without the weight of our own limitations.
A Heartfelt Prayer
Lord, I confess that I often use my role as wife and mother as an excuse to stay within my comfort zone. Help me to see beyond my walls and hear Your voice calling me to more. Teach me to pray for the world, not just my own family. Help me to educate my heart and mind to see the world through Your eyes.
