Unlocking the Mystery of Underfunding in Ministry: The Power of Giving

The Call to Serve: Unpacking the Mystery of Underfunding

As I reflect on my years of ministry and travel, I’ve had the privilege of meeting numerous individuals who’ve answered God’s call to serve. These dedicated servants have surrendered their lives to His purpose, yet often struggle to secure the necessary support. This paradox has left me wondering: Why do these faithful servants face financial hardship when God’s calling is undoubtedly upon them?

The Role of Givers in Ministry

The primary source of support for these servants comes from others whom God has appointed as givers. This raises essential questions: Are these servants underfunded due to a lack of effort or misguided priorities? Or is God using their situation to teach them dependence on Him, testing their faith? In 2 Corinthians 8:1-7, Paul addresses this very issue, offering valuable insights to both givers and those who serve.

A Privilege, Not a Chore

Paul emphasizes three crucial points to his givers. Firstly, giving is a privilege, not an obligation. Givers should plead with God for the opportunity to share with those He has called to serve. Secondly, giving stems from the exercise of God’s grace, which He has already bestowed upon them. Lastly, givers are encouraged to excel in their giving. Perhaps, then, the lack of support lies not with those called to serve, but with those called to give.

Who Are the Givers?

This realization prompts a natural question: Who are these givers, and what is their role in supporting God’s servants? As I ponder this, I am reminded of the importance of understanding our individual callings and responsibilities within the body of Christ.

A Prayer for Generosity

My prayer for you this week is that you would grasp the truth about God’s grace and respond with overflowing joy and generosity, even in the face of trials and poverty. May you plead with God for the privilege of sharing in the service to His saints, giving yourself first to the Lord and then to His workers, according to His will. As you excel in faith, speech, knowledge, and love, may you also excel in the grace of giving. Amen.
