Reflecting the Heart of God
The Bible reminds us that “as water reflects a face, so a man’s heart reflects the man” (Proverbs 27:19). Have you ever struggled with persistent sin in your life, only to feel discouraged and stuck? I certainly have. There was a time when I desperately wanted to change certain aspects of myself, but the more I thought about them and prayed about them, the worse they seemed to get.
Focusing on the Problem, Not the Solution
Then, I had a revelation: I was focusing on the problem, not on God. I was trying to overcome my struggles through my own strength, rather than relying on His power. This realization led me to explore the concept of displacement and replacement, particularly in relation to self-esteem.
The Bucket Analogy
Imagine a bucket filled with water, representing the good qualities about yourself. As people criticize or belittle you, negative thoughts and emotions can chip away at your self-esteem, like pebbles being dropped into the bucket. The water level decreases, and your good qualities are overshadowed by the negatives.
Transforming Our Minds
The Bible encourages us to “not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2). This transformation is possible through the power of God’s Word. As we focus on His truth, our minds are renewed, and we are able to “test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Putting Off the Old Self
In Ephesians 4:22-23, we are taught to “put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” This process of transformation is not a one-time event, but rather a continuous journey of growth and renewal.
Focusing on God’s Word
So, how do we achieve this transformation? The answer lies in Philippians 4:8, which encourages us to think about “whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy.” It is God’s Word that renews our minds and transforms our hearts.
Prayer for Transformation
Dear heavenly Father, I come to you today with a humble heart, seeking forgiveness for the stubborn sin in my life. Keep me focused on your Word, that through your power, my old self will vanish, and your righteousness and holiness will reign in my heart and actions. Guide me and grant me wisdom, that my heart may be transformed to reflect your glory. Amen.
