Lace Up for Spiritual Battle: Putting on God’s Armor

Embracing the Armor of God

As we embark on our spiritual journey, we’re reminded to “put on God’s armor” and “fit our feet with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace” (Ephesians 6:11, 15). This armor is not just a metaphor; it’s a call to action, a reminder to prepare ourselves for the battles ahead.

The Origin of Sneakers

Interestingly, the concept of sneakers has its roots in the 1800s. A London police officer created rubber-soled shoes to catch criminals off guard, earning them the nickname “sneakers” due to their silent approach. Today, we know them as sneakers, tennis shoes, runners, or trainers, depending on our geographical location. Whatever the name, these shoes are designed for activity, and so are we as Christians.

Spiritual Preparation

So, what does it mean to “fit our feet”? Some believe it refers to the protective gear worn by soldiers to safeguard their feet during long marches and battles. Whatever the exact meaning, it’s clear that spiritual preparation is essential for our journey. Well-fitting shoes are crucial for healthy feet, just as proper spiritual preparation is necessary for our intended activity: proclaiming peace, bringing good news, and boldly declaring God’s sovereignty.

Experiencing God’s Peace

Preparing for this activity means personally experiencing God’s peace by casting all our care on Him. We not only proclaim salvation but also experience it as God continually saves us from the things that hinder and weigh us down. What a unique joy it is to believe in God’s sovereignty over every aspect of our lives! As Isaiah 52:7 reminds us, “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of a messenger who proclaims peace, who brings good news, who proclaims salvation, who says to Zion, ‘Your God rules!’”

A Call to Reflection

Lord, it’s easy to think that slipshod preparation will suffice, but undisciplined living often follows. Help us remember to ensure our armor fits, to make sure we’re prepared for spiritual battle. Take a moment to reflect: what two or three things do you do to prepare for spiritual battle?
