Heaven Bound: Fixing Your Eyes on Eternity

The Ultimate Destination

As I gazed around at my fellow travelers on a recent flight, I noticed a sense of contentment. They had found ways to pass the time, whether through reading, napping, or puzzle-solving. But what if the pilot suddenly announced that this plane was our final destination? That we would never land, and this vessel was our permanent home? Chaos would erupt. We would demand a landing strip, refusing to accept such a fate. The journey, no matter how enjoyable, is not the goal.

A Greater Purpose

Deep down, we know there’s more to life than this life. Our hearts yearn for something beyond the present moment. We may not know exactly what we’re searching for, but we’re driven to seek it out. In God’s grand narrative, our time on earth is merely the beginning – the first chapter in the incredible story He’s writing with our lives.

Unfulfilled Longings

Do you feel like your best years are behind you? Don’t believe it. Your most remarkable achievements await you in heaven. Have you wasted time on frivolous pursuits? So have I. But we can stop lamenting the past. We have eternity to make up for lost time. Are you perplexed by life’s challenges? View yourself as an uncut gem, and God as the master craftsman, polishing you for your place in His kingdom. Your most significant moments lie ahead, on the other side of eternity.

Seeking the Eternal

The Bible urges us to “seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God” (Colossians 3:1). This isn’t a casual suggestion; it’s a passionate pursuit. We’re called to covet heaven, to strive after it, to desire it with every fiber of our being. Imagine seeking heaven with the same intensity a sailor seeks the coast, a pilot seeks the landing strip, or a missile seeks its target. Head for home with the same determination a pigeon wings its way back to the nest or the prodigal son strode towards his father.

Obsessed with Heaven

Think only about heaven. Keep your mind fixed on it. Set your sights on the realities of heaven. Pursue the things over which Christ presides. Obsess yourself with the ultimate destination, where your true home awaits.
