The Power of Generosity: Giving from the Heart
In today’s world of big-box stores and shopping malls, small businesses have become a rare breed. One establishment that’s often missed is the humble neighborhood drug store. Fortunately, I still have one just around the corner, where the druggist knows me by name and I have his home phone number. It’s a relationship built on trust and mutual respect.
A Lesson in Integrity
Last week, I visited my local drug store to pick up some prescriptions. As I paid the bill, I noticed that two of the prescriptions hadn’t been charged. I brought it to the cashier’s attention, and they promptly corrected the bill with gratitude. It made me think about how many people would have taken advantage of the situation, thinking the drugstore wouldn’t miss the loss. But stealing is stealing, no matter how small the amount.
Honoring God with Our Best
The Book of Malachi reminds us of the importance of honoring God with our best. In the past, people would shortchange God by giving Him the worst of their animals for sacrifice instead of the best. It’s a stark reminder that God deserves our very best, not the leftovers. As the country’s largest card company once said, “When you care enough to send the very best.” God sent His very best, His Son, to give us eternal life. Should we do anything less?
The Importance of Giving
The issue isn’t that God needs our gifts; it’s that we need to give them. God calls us to be generous givers, leaving a lasting legacy. Take inventory of what you’re giving to God – time, talents, and treasure. If it’s not your very best, ask yourself why not. As the Bible says, “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:7)
Leaving a Lasting Legacy
So, what kind of legacy do you want to leave? One of generosity and joy, or one of selfishness and greed? The choice is ours. By giving our very best to God, we’re not only honoring Him, but we’re also fulfilling our own purpose. As we strive to be more like God, let’s remember to give Him our very best, not just what’s leftover.
