Conquering the Shadows of Doubt
As I wake up early on Sunday mornings, the world outside is still quiet, unaware of the weight that’s been pressing on my heart. It’s a big day, one where I’ll stand before a congregation of people seeking conviction and hope. But what if I’m not convinced myself? What if the doubts that creep in during those pre-dawn hours threaten to consume me?
The Valley of Doubt
We’ve all been there – in that dark valley where fear and uncertainty reign. It’s a place where the question “why?” seems to have no answer, and the existence of God feels like a distant memory. Even the most devout among us have faced these doubts at some point. The good news is that we’re not alone, and Christ has a response to our doubts.
A Meal, a Lesson, and Courage
In the final chapter of Luke’s gospel, we find two stories that answer the question: how does Christ respond when we doubt him? For the disciples on the road to Emmaus and those in the upper room, Jesus’ response was simple yet profound. He served them a meal, taught them from the scriptures, and gave them courage. And in doing so, he showed us that our doubts can be overcome.
Touching the Body of Christ
We may not be able to touch Jesus’ physical wounds, but we can still touch the body of Christ – the church. The church is not just a building or an institution; it’s a community of believers who come together to support and encourage one another. When we gather together, sharing our discoveries and insights, Christ speaks through us. We find courage in community, and our doubts begin to dissipate.
The Power of Fellowship
The disciples’ example teaches us the importance of sticking together, even when our hopes seem lost. They shared their thoughts, exchanged ideas, and lifted each other’s spirits. And in doing so, Jesus showed up to teach them. This is a picture of the church at its best – a community that shares, supports, and prays together. When we come together in Christ’s name, he promises to be there with us.
Overcoming Doubt Together
So the next time doubt creeps in, remember that you’re not alone. Gather with fellow believers, share your fears and uncertainties, and let Christ speak through the community. For in the end, it’s not about having all the answers; it’s about trusting in the one who does.
