Finding Hope in the Darkness
As I sit in silence, I’m often met with an unsettling feeling – God’s presence seems distant, almost non-existent. It’s as if He’s a million miles away, leaving me with more questions than answers. I’m sure I’m not alone in this struggle. Have you ever felt like God is hiding, and your emotions are screaming for attention?
The Unreliability of Feelings
We’ve all been there – our emotions ebb and flow like the tides, influenced by the whims of life. One moment we’re soaring on the wings of joy, and the next, we’re drowning in despair. But here’s the thing: God’s Word remains steadfast, a beacon of hope in the darkest of times. He promises to never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). The same compassionate God who comforts us on good days is the same God who holds us on bad days.
Choosing Facts Over Feelings
So, what do we stand on – facts or feelings? The choice is ours. We must decide to anchor ourselves in the truth of God’s Word, even when our emotions scream otherwise. Here are two exercises that help me shift my focus from despair to hope:
Singing God’s Truths
One of my morning routines is to spend twenty minutes on the treadmill, singing hymns and praises to God. As I belt out the words, I’m reminded of His goodness and faithfulness. It’s a powerful way to start the day, filling my heart with hope and confidence.
Repeating God’s Truths
I also write out Bible verses and read them throughout the day. Sometimes I say them out loud, affirming their truth and power. Verses like Deuteronomy 31:8 and Lamentations 3:22-23 become my lifeline, reminding me of God’s presence and compassion. As I repeat these truths, my feelings begin to align with the message, moving from despair to hope.
A Prayer of Confidence
Jesus, I thank you that you’ve promised to never leave me as an orphan. You will come to me, and I will move ahead with confidence, knowing you are with me now. Amen.
