Unwavering Trust: A Beacon of Hope in Dark Times
Faith is the unwavering assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. This profound definition, found in Hebrews 11:1-2, has inspired countless believers throughout history. One such example is Louisa Stead, the author of the beloved hymn ” ‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus.” While the melody and lyrics may evoke feelings of serenity and hope, few know the story behind its creation.
A Life of Trials and Triumphs
Louisa’s life was marked by adversity, not tranquility. Her dreams of becoming a missionary in China were shattered when her health failed. Later, tragedy struck again when her husband drowned in a beach accident, leaving her a widow with a young daughter. Undeterred, Louisa moved to Africa, where she continued to serve as a missionary, remarried, and raised her daughter. It was during these darkest moments that she penned the iconic hymn.
Learning to Trust
One often-overlooked line in the hymn holds the key to understanding Louisa’s journey: “I’m so glad I learned to trust you, precious Jesus, Savior, Friend.” Her trust was not forged in the easy times, but in the crucible of suffering and uncertainty. Many of us long for greater faith, but we often want it handed to us without undergoing the refining process that God uses to shape us. The giants of faith, celebrated in scripture and history, are those who clung to God even when His love and plan seemed obscure.
Embracing God’s Presence
Louisa’s hymn concludes with the reassuring words, “And I know that you are with me, will be with me to the end.” This promise of God’s presence brings comfort, but it’s easy to forget that His presence is not limited to times of ease. Father, teach me to trust You in all circumstances, even when pain and discouragement assail me. Help me to grasp the depth of Your love, even when it’s hard to see.
