Embracing the New Covenant: A Promise of Belonging and Unity

The Promise of a New Era

In the book of Jeremiah, a profound declaration is made: “I, the LORD, will make a New Covenant, not like the one I made before. I will write my instruction on their hearts; I will be their God and they shall be my people.” (Jeremiah 31:31-34) These words, spoken by God Himself, hold immense significance, especially when considered in the context of communion, as Jesus Christ referred to the cup as “the new covenant in My blood” (Luke 22:20).

A Personal Reflection

As I delve into the meaning of this New Covenant, I am drawn to the pivotal phrase: “I will be their God and they shall be my people.” Each word carries weight, revealing the depth of God’s love and intention. The God Who Is – I, the Creator of heaven and earth, life giver and life sustainer. I, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I, Yahweh, the LORD; I AM THAT I AM. This is the God who desires a personal relationship with His people.

A Future Promise

The phrase “I will be their God” implies a future tense, a promise yet to be fulfilled. It suggests that God is not yet fully recognized as their God, but He will be. In that future day, all people – Jew and Gentile alike – who believe in Him and worship the Christ Redeemer will be grafted into His family. A Unified People – And they shall be My people, not separate groups or distinct peoples, but one people, one family, one body, one Church…one. Each individual will be unique and special, yet united under God’s loving care.

The Power of Belonging

For those who have never experienced the love and acceptance of a family, these words may seem incomprehensible. Yet, they hold a profound hope – the promise of belonging to a loving God who will nourish, nurture, and teach them. The Fulfillment of the Promise – When Jesus Christ brought the New Covenant into reality, it became both now and not yet. One day, when Christ returns, the New Covenant will simply be now, and God will say, “I am their God, and they are My people.” Welcome home.
