Divine Appointments: When Faith Meets Obedience

The Unlikely Encounter

A Rooftop Revelation

Perched on a rooftop in Caesarea, Peter, the apostle, was consumed by hunger – not just for his daily bread, but for the eternal sustenance of life. As he waited for his meal to be prepared, he sought the presence of God. In this state of deep contemplation, Peter received a vision that would challenge his understanding of faith.

A Vision of Forbidden Food

In the vision, Peter saw food considered impure by Jewish law. His initial reaction was one of recoil, echoing his conviction that he had never eaten anything unclean. However, a heavenly voice intervened, declaring, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean” (Acts 10:15). Peter was perplexed, yet God was orchestrating a plan that would transcend cultural boundaries.

A Centurion’s Quest

Across town, a Gentile centurion named Cornelius was seeking the one true God. Unbeknownst to Peter, Cornelius had been instructed by God to find a man named Peter, who would bring the good news of Jesus Christ. As Peter pondered the meaning of his vision, three men sent by Cornelius arrived at his doorstep.

A Divine Appointment

The Holy Spirit prompted Peter to accompany the men to Cornelius’ house, where a crowd awaited the message of salvation. Cornelius shared his own divine encounter, in which God promised to send a messenger four days prior. In that moment, Peter understood the true meaning of his vision: the gospel was intended for all people, regardless of their background.

The Great Engineer

As Oswald Chambers so eloquently put it, God is the Great Engineer, masterfully crafting circumstances to bring about moments of divine importance in our lives. The encounter between Peter and Cornelius serves as a powerful reminder of God’s ability to engineer divine appointments in our lives.
