Embracing Spiritual Growth: A Lifelong Journey
As we embark on our Christian walk, it’s essential to recognize that spiritual growth is a lifelong process. The Bible reminds us, “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby” (1 Peter 2:2, KJV). This verse highlights the importance of nurturing our faith, just as a newborn baby relies on milk for growth and development.
The Misconception of Overnight Spiritual Maturity
Many new Christians, like Sam, struggle with feelings of impatience and inadequacy. They compare themselves to others who have been walking with the Lord for years, wondering why they’re not as spiritually mature. However, it’s crucial to understand that spiritual growth is a gradual process, much like physical growth. We begin as spiritual infants and progress through various stages of development, ultimately reaching Christian maturity.
The Example of Apostle Paul
Lane Adams, a renowned teacher and author, aptly pointed out that even Apostle Paul didn’t become a spiritual giant overnight. In fact, many years passed before the Holy Spirit commissioned him as a missionary. This serves as a reminder that spiritual growth takes time, effort, and dedication.
Empowered by the Holy Spirit
If you desire to serve the Lord in a specific capacity, such as teaching, ask the Holy Spirit to empower you with the necessary gifts and abilities. While it’s possible that the Holy Spirit may grant you exceptional abilities suddenly, it’s unlikely. Instead, focus on developing your natural talents through hard work and dedication, trusting that the Holy Spirit will guide and equip you.
Faith and Works
The Bible teaches us that “faith without works is useless.” As unique members of the Body of Christ, we each have special tasks to accomplish. The Holy Spirit will empower us to carry out these tasks as we continue to trust and obey Him. God has a plan for each of our lives, and He provides the direction and power of His Holy Spirit to accomplish that plan.
Accelerating Spiritual Growth
To accelerate our spiritual growth, we must commit to hiding God’s Word in our hearts, spending time in prayer, walking in the Spirit, and sharing our faith with others as a way of life. By doing so, we’ll become effective vessels for God’s glory, fulfilling His plan for our lives.

Recognizing that you are in the process of maturing spiritually, commit to seeking spiritual growth by:
- Hiding the Word of God in your heart
