The Unseen Struggle: Breaking Free from Addiction’s Grip
As I reflect on my encounters with individuals battling addiction, one conversation stands out. A person confessed that if they didn’t see a change in thirty days, they’d be left with no choice but to end their life. Yet, in the same breath, they expressed a deep-seated desire to live. This paradox highlights the complexity of addiction: a desperate cry for help entwined with a stubborn refusal to surrender.
The Illusion of Control
This individual, a self-proclaimed Christian, insisted on tackling their addiction alone, convinced that they could overcome it through sheer willpower. Time and again, this approach has proven futile, yet the illusion of control persists. It’s a common phenomenon, where the addicted person acknowledges their faith in Jesus as Savior but hesitates to submit to His Lordship.
Beyond the Obvious
When we think of addiction, we often focus on the more visible vices: gambling, alcohol, drugs, and pornography. However, there are subtler forms of addiction that can be just as destructive. Work, computers, TV, and food can all become “must-haves” that dictate our lives, causing harm to ourselves and others. Any behavior that supplants our relationship with the Lord must be confronted and addressed.
A Prayer for Freedom
As I pray for those struggling with addiction, I’m reminded of Amos 5:14: “Seek good, not evil, that you may live. Then the LORD God Almighty will be with you, just as you say he is. Amen.” My heart’s desire is for individuals to break free from the shackles of addiction and seek a deeper connection with the Lord.
A Call to Action
Addiction is a multifaceted issue that requires compassion, understanding, and support. As we navigate this complex landscape, let us remember that true freedom can only be found by surrendering to God’s sovereignty. Will you join me in praying for those struggling with addiction, that they may find the strength to seek good and live a life that honors the Lord?
