Breaking Free from Fear and Finding True Liberation
The concept of surrender often sparks fear and anxiety in our hearts. We mistakenly believe that surrendering to a higher power means losing control and autonomy. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. As Jesus so eloquently put it, “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:34, 36). Similarly, the apostle Paul wrote, “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom” (2 Corinthians 3:17).
Unshackling Ourselves from the Past
For many of us, the idea of surrender is tainted by past experiences of oppression or abuse. We may have been hurt by someone in authority, leading us to associate surrender with loss of freedom. I have a friend who spent three years in a Japanese prison camp, where he witnessed cruel beatings and insults daily. Even years later, he struggles to surrender to God, fearing it will lead to a loss of autonomy. But this fear is unfounded.
The Paradox of Surrender
When we surrender to Christ, we don’t lose freedom – we gain it. He sets us free from the sins that harm us and others. By grasping His love for us, we can release our fears and let go of the negative thought patterns that hold us back. As we fill our minds with His truths, we’re liberated from the shackles of our past.
Living in Harmony with Our True Nature
When we walk in God’s way of surrender, we align ourselves with how we were created. We reach our highest potential, becoming more fulfilled and content. I’ve discovered that the more I surrender to Jesus, the more truly alive I am. It’s a paradox that makes perfect sense – why wouldn’t I want to surrender to Someone who is bigger and wiser than I am, Someone who loves me and wants the best for me and my loved ones?
A Prayer of Surrender
So, are you ready to surrender yourself and your loved ones to God? Here’s a prayer to get you started:
“Lord Jesus, I surrender myself to you to do your will and your work today. With my mind, I want to think your thoughts. With my eyes, I want to see each person as you see them. With my heart, I want to love you more fervently and others more selflessly.”
Embracing True Freedom
Surrender is not about losing control; it’s about gaining freedom. It’s about living in harmony with our true nature and reaching our highest potential. So, take a step of faith today and surrender to the One who loves you more than you can imagine. You never know the freedom and fulfillment that awaits you.
