Representing the Kingdom: A Higher Calling
As we step into unfamiliar territories, both physically and spiritually, we’re reminded of our sacred duty as citizens of the Kingdom of God. The apostle Paul’s words echo in our hearts: “God…gave us the ministry of reconciliation…He has committed to us the message of reconciliation…We are Christ’s ambassadors…” (2 Corinthians 5:20).
Cultural Immersion and the Weight of Representation
Imagine standing in a crowded visa control line, surrounded by unfamiliar faces and customs. The stern officials, armed and uniformed, can be intimidating. As educators invited to introduce new instructional techniques to local teachers in a country historically resistant to Western ideas, we’re acutely aware of the weight of our presence. Our hosts know we’re Christians, and that our teachings will be rooted in morals and ethics founded on our faith.
The Unwritten Job Description
As we navigate the complexities of cultural differences, we’re reminded that our occupation goes beyond the mundane. We’re ambassadors of Christ, entrusted with the ministry of reconciliation. This sacred calling requires us to faithfully represent the values of our Kingdom, even in the face of uncertainty and potential hostility.
The Power of Humility and Awareness
In this foreign land, we’re forced to confront our own limitations and biases. We must acknowledge that we’re not equipped with diplomatic papers or earthly qualifications, but rather with the authority of our heavenly appointment. As we humbly acknowledge our inadequacies, we can pray for guidance: “Lord, I don’t have the earthly qualifications for the post of ambassador, but thank you for appointing me to that position in your Kingdom. Help me faithfully learn about the culture where I live so I can best represent you and your values.”
Embracing Our Sacred Duty
As we venture into uncharted territories, let us remember that our occupation as ambassadors of Christ is not limited to our visa papers or job titles. It’s a calling that resonates deep within our hearts, a reminder of our sacred duty to faithfully represent the Kingdom of God in every aspect of our lives.
