Trusting in God: A New Year’s Reflection on Faith and Hope

A Time for Reflection and Renewal

As we embark on a new year, it’s essential to pause and reflect on the state of our world. The wisdom of Psalm 20:7 reminds us, “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; But we will remember the name of the Lord our God.” These words serve as a poignant reminder of where our true trust should lie.

A Republic, If We Can Keep It

Benjamin Franklin’s famous response to a reporter’s question about the type of government the Continental Convention had created still resonates today. “A republic, if you can keep it,” he said. This statement, made over two centuries ago, highlights the cyclical nature of national dominance. History shows that the cycle typically unfolds as follows: from bondage to spiritual faith, from spiritual faith to courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to apathy, from apathy to dependency, and finally, back to bondage.

Where Are We in the Cycle?

As we navigate the complexities of 2023, it’s clear that we’re facing unprecedented global economic uncertainty, engaging in unwinnable wars against unknown enemies, and struggling with a growing dependency on government support. The world is indeed in turmoil. So, where can we place our trust and faith in these uncertain times?

The Only Safe Haven

We cannot rely on human leaders or nations, as they will inevitably disappoint us. We cannot trust in economic systems or military might, as they are fleeting and unreliable. In this new year, the only secure place to put our trust is in God. As Psalm 2:12 and Psalm 34:8 remind us, “Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.”

A Resolution Worth Making

As we consider our New Year’s resolutions, let us make a commitment to trust in God alone. Let us declare, as Psalm 18:2 says, “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” For where we place our treasure, there our heart will follow. Put your trust in Him, and He will not let you down.

God, Our Hope

In these uncertain times, God is our hope. Let us put our lives in His hands, trusting that He will guide us through the turmoil and bring us peace. As we navigate the complexities of 2023, may we remember to keep our eyes fixed on the One who is our rock, our fortress, and our deliverer.
