The High Price of Freedom
When freedom finally arrives, it’s a gift that’s hard to forget. Just ask someone who’s been liberated from years of oppression. They’ll never go back to that life willingly. Yet, surprisingly, God needs to remind us that our freedom comes with a cost, and that it’s essential to appreciate the sacrifice made on our behalf. If we fail to recognize this, we risk slipping back into the chains of bondage (Galatians 5:2).
The Cost of Liberation
God didn’t abandon His throne for nothing. He came to set us free, to rescue us from the prison of sin and its consequences. The price of our freedom was His own blood, shed on the cross. It’s crucial to remember this sacrifice, lest we start seeking validation from God through our good deeds, forgetting that it’s His work alone that justifies us.
The Danger of Complacency
We must be vigilant, lest we drift back into slavery. 2 Peter 3:17 warns us, “Be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position.” It’s easy to get complacent, to forget the yoke of bondage we once wore. But we must remember the joy and wonder of our initial salvation experience.
Total Dependence on God’s Grace
Jesus reminds us, “apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). This truth underscores our complete reliance on God’s grace. We didn’t earn our freedom; it was given to us through the death and resurrection of Christ. May we never forget this fundamental truth.
A Prayer for Remembrance
Lord, keep me from my old way of thinking and take away my desires for worthless things. Remind me often that you alone, through your death on the cross, have removed my sins and given me a righteousness that was not my own. Amen.
