Pursuing the Ultimate Goal: Living a Life That Honors God

Pursuing the Ultimate Goal

When it comes to setting goals, we’ve all been there – attending conferences, reading books, and listening to motivational speeches. We’ve been encouraged to set goals for our business, professional, and personal lives. But have you ever stopped to think about setting goals for your faith life?

A Biblical Perspective

The apostle Paul provides a powerful example of goal-setting in Philippians 3:13-14. He writes, “Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Paul’s ultimate goal is clear: to receive the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Breaking Down the Goal

So, what does it mean to pursue this goal? For Paul, it means:

  • Knowing Christ more deeply
  • Becoming like Christ
  • Fulfilling God’s purpose for his life
  • Letting go of the past and focusing on the future

Staying Focused

To achieve this goal, we must have a single-minded determination, avoiding distractions and staying committed to our pursuit. As Dr. David Jeremiah reminds us, “No one is saved BY good works, but every Christian has been saved FOR good works” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

The Good News

The amazing thing about pursuing this ultimate goal is that Jesus is cheering us on! He wants us to know Him more, to become like Him, and to live an abundant, joyful life. Unlike our business, professional, and personal goals, where we may face competition and obstacles, Jesus supports our efforts, gives us strength in our weakness, and reminds us that all things are possible through Him.

Prioritizing Our Goals

When we make Jesus our ultimate goal, all other goals fall into their proper place. Our focus shifts from earthly pursuits to eternal ones, and we begin to live a life that honors God. So, let’s press on toward the goal, knowing that Jesus is with us every step of the way.
