The Unparalleled Privilege of God’s Presence
Among all nations, Israel stood out for one remarkable reason: God dwelled in their midst. The tabernacle and temple served as His earthly abode, a tangible manifestation of His presence. This extraordinary privilege finds its New Testament counterpart in the heart of every believer, where God takes up residence.
A Home in the Heart
Jesus Himself promised, “All those who love Me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and live with them” (John 14:23). This indwelling reality is echoed in Paul’s personal testimony: “Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20). The gospel, in essence, is the dispensation of this indwelling Christ.
Unlocking the Blessing
In Ephesians 3:14-19, Paul provides a roadmap for experiencing this profound blessing. He begins by emphasizing the necessity of prayer, falling on his knees to petition the Father (v. 14). This is where the blessing originates – from the Father to the praying believer. Next, Paul prays for inner strength through the Holy Spirit, drawing from the Father’s unlimited resources (v. 16). This strength enables Christ to make Himself increasingly at home in our hearts as we trust in Him (v. 17).
The Nature of Christ
It is inherent in Christ’s nature to desire residence in the heart of faith. As we prayerfully reflect on this reality, we come to appreciate the magnitude of His decision to make our hearts His home. This realization can be life-transforming, prompting us to meditate on the boundless love of God, in which our roots can grow deep and strong (v. 18).
A Life of Intimacy
The indwelling Christ is not just a theological concept; it is a lived experience. As we surrender to His presence, we can expect to encounter the Father’s love in unprecedented ways. May our hearts become a welcoming sanctuary for the One who desires to reside within us.
