Heaven’s Letter of Reference
As I turned the pages of Anne LaMotte’s thought-provoking book, “Plan B: Further Thoughts on Faith,” I stumbled upon a powerful quote that has lingered in my mind. Reverend James Forbes’ words, “Nobody gets into heaven without a letter of reference from the poor,” struck a chord deep within me.
A Culture of Self-Absorption
Our society is often consumed by the pursuit of popularity and individual success. We get caught up in the noise of self-promotion, forgetting the true measure of our character. However, when we take a step back, quiet our hearts, and sit at the feet of God, we are reminded of Jesus’ radical love for the marginalized.
A Kingdom of Inclusion
In Matthew 25, the Son of Man separates the sheep from the goats, distinguishing between those who cared for the poor and the prisoners and those who did not. The sheep, who demonstrated compassion and kindness, are welcomed into the kingdom inheritance. This biblical truth challenges our self-centered culture, urging us to reevaluate our priorities.
Seeing the Unseen
As we turn our hearts towards God, we begin to see the world through His eyes. We notice the poor, the prisoners, and the unloved – those whom the world often disregards. May we be moved to reach out with love, grace, and compassion, recognizing the inherent value of every human soul.
A Prayer of Humility
Lord, help me to see beyond my own interests and biases. May I be your hands and feet, extending love and kindness to those who need it most. As I walk in your footsteps, may I earn a letter of reference from the poor, and may my heart be transformed in the process.
