Unity in Action: The Power of Collective Strength
As we approach the 100-year milestone of the Royal Gorge Bridge in Cañon City, Colorado, it’s astonishing to consider its durability. Completed in 1929 at a cost of $350,000 (approximately $15 million today), this engineering marvel spans 1,260 feet and towers 150 feet above the ground. Despite its age, there are no signs of collapse, thanks to the collective strength of 2,100 strands of galvanized wire.
The Strength of Unity
Individually, each wire could be easily snapped, but together, they form an unbreakable bond, supporting the entire weight of the bridge and welcoming hundreds of tourists every year. This remarkable feat serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of unity in our own lives.
A Biblical Call to Unity
The author of Hebrews urges us to “not give up meeting together … but let us encourage one another” (Hebrews 10:25). In Acts, we see the early church coming together to support and uplift one another (Acts 2:42-48). Unfortunately, our churches often struggle with strife and argument, rather than encouragement and fellowship.
Forgiveness and Understanding
Paul teaches us to “Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you” (Colossians 3:13). Our work alongside fellow Christians is too crucial to ignore. As frail individuals, we are like thin strands of wire – weak on our own, but when we mutually support one another, empowered by the Holy Spirit, we become strong.
A Personal Reflection
Do you sometimes find it uncomfortable meeting with other believers? Why or why not? Take a moment to reflect on the importance of unity in your own faith journey. By embracing collective strength, we can achieve far more than we ever could alone.
