Finding Hope in Darkness
When life takes a drastic turn for the worse, it can be a wake-up call like no other. Just as the prodigal son had to lose everything to discover his true self, Jonah’s journey in the belly of the whale was a turning point that led him back to God. Similarly, my husband’s painful job loss at 26 sent him spiraling into depression.
A Descent into Darkness
We spent our savings on a move to a bigger city, hoping for a fresh start, but his depression made it impossible for him to find a decent job. The anger and hurtful words that followed were devastating. In desperation, I took our two-year-old son and left, hoping the shock would bring him to his senses.
The Turning Point
And it did. Humbled and broken, my husband finally realized he had hit rock bottom. He turned back to the Lord and agreed to seek counseling. Through daily prayer and conversation, we began to rebuild our relationship. After several weeks, we renewed our marriage vows, and we’ve been happily married for over 40 years.
The Power of Rock Bottom
Reaching the lowest point in life can be a transformative experience. It’s often the only time people can see themselves and their situation clearly, and understand their desperate need for God’s love and mercy. If you’re stuck in a seemingly hopeless situation, remember that Jesus is always present, ready to offer a helping hand.
A Prayer for Guidance
Dear Lord, I pray that I may never have to hit rock bottom to see you clearly. But if I lose my way in the darkness, please help me look up and find you again. Amen.
