Life’s Unexpected Turns: The Importance of Guidance
As I reflect on my childhood, a particular memory stands out – the time I tried to run away from home at the tender age of four. With my little pink suitcase in hand and my trusty stuffed lion by my side, I navigated around the block, only to end up back at my front door, tears streaming down my face. The experience taught me a valuable lesson: the importance of boundaries and guidance.
Seeking Wisdom in Uncertain Times
Years later, while preparing a talk for a group of churchwomen, I stumbled upon a collection of children’s letters to God online. One letter, in particular, resonated deeply with me. “You don’t have to worry about me. I always look both ways,” wrote Dean. His innocence and trust in the rules set by his caregivers struck a chord. As adults, we often take control of our lives, making decisions and plotting our course without considering the unknown.
The Unpredictability of Life
We’ve all experienced those unexpected moments that leave us reeling. A sudden job loss, a diagnosis, or a natural disaster can turn our world upside down. In those moments, we may wonder if anyone is watching over us. But as we navigate the aftermath, we may discover that something – or someone – has been guiding us all along.
Holding On to Lifelines
In times of crisis, we often cling to words of wisdom, whether from scripture, loved ones, or our own subconscious. Romans 8:28, Philippians 4:6-7, and Psalm 121:3-8 are just a few examples of biblical passages that offer comfort and guidance. My mother’s warning to never cross the street alone also echoes in my mind. These reminders serve as lifelines, helping us stay grounded when the world around us seems to be spinning out of control.
Embracing Childlike Faith
Perhaps, as adults, we need to recapture some of that childlike trust and humility. Instead of relying solely on our own judgment, we should seek guidance and ask for permission. We should be willing to hold onto someone’s hand, even if it’s just figuratively. By doing so, we can find peace and reassurance in the midst of life’s uncertainties.
Looking Both Ways
As I reflect on Dean’s letter, I’m reminded of the importance of looking both ways – not just physically, but spiritually as well. By doing so, we can avoid the pitfalls of life and find comfort in the knowledge that someone is watching over us. So, let’s take a cue from Dean and remember to look both ways, seeking guidance and wisdom in all we do.
