The Royal Standard of Love
As we strive to embody the essence of love, we must first understand what it is not. The apostle Paul reminds us that love does not behave rudely (1 Corinthians 13:5, NIV). Rudeness is a pervasive force that manifests in various ways, from snatching parking spaces to mocking others and interrupting conversations. It’s a far cry from the example set by Christ, who exemplified courtesy, patience, thoughtfulness, and respect in His interactions with people.
The Etymology of Courtesy
Interestingly, the first five letters of the word “courteous” spell out “court.” In medieval England, to be courteous meant to conduct oneself in a manner befitting the royal court. The king’s family and servants were held to a higher standard of behavior, and similarly, as representatives of the King of Kings, we are called to uphold a noble code of conduct.
Representing the King
As ambassadors of Christ, we are tasked with demonstrating a love that is respectful, considerate, and gracious. This means refraining from rude behavior and instead, choosing to act with kindness, empathy, and compassion. By doing so, we reflect the character of our King and bring glory to His name.
A Higher Standard
As we navigate our daily lives, let us remember that we are called to a higher standard of behavior. We are not merely ordinary citizens, but rather, we are part of a royal priesthood, commissioned to represent the King in all we do. May our actions, words, and attitudes be a testament to the love and courtesy that defines our Lord.
