Discovering Authentic Identity: Uncovering God’s Truth in a World of Self-Made Cisterns

The Quest for True Identity

At the core of our being, there’s a deep-seated longing to discover who we truly are and to be understood and appreciated for our authenticity. This innate desire is not inherently evil; rather, it’s a God-given yearning to uncover the essence of who He created us to be.

A Grieving Heart

In Jeremiah 2, God paints a vivid picture of His people’s initial passion and devotion to Him, only to witness their hearts changing over time. They abandoned the Spring of Living Water, opting instead to dig their own cisterns in search of fulfillment. This painful reality is reflected in God’s poignant question, “How’s that working for you?”

The Futility of Self-Made Cisterns

As we reflect on our own lives, it’s easy to spot the areas where we’ve sought identity and legitimacy in our own creations, rather than drinking from the Living Water. These self-made cisterns, though they may have initially seemed promising, ultimately prove empty and unsatisfying.

Meditating on Truth

To break free from this cycle, it’s essential to internalize the truths of who God is and who we are in Him. As John Calvin so eloquently put it, “The Word of God is not received by faith if it fills the top of the brain, but when it takes root in the depth of the heart.” By meditating on these truths, we can experience a profound transformation.

The Many Faces of God

God is Jehovah-Jireh, our Provider (Genesis 22:14). He is Jehovah-Rophe, our Healer (Exodus 15:26). He is Jehovah-Shalom, our Peace (Judges 6:24). He is Jehovah-Nissi, our Banner (Exodus 17:15). He is Jehovah-Rohi, our Shepherd (Psalm 23:1). And He is Jehovah-Tsidkenu, our Righteousness (Jeremiah 23:6).

Drinking Deep

As we allow these truths to sink deep into our spirits, we begin to understand our legitimacy, identity, significance, and birthright are defined by God alone. We are free from the law of sin and death, and we are continually with God (Romans 8:2, Psalm 73:23). Stop and receive these truths deeply in your spirit, and discover the fulfillment that only comes from drinking from the Living Water.
