Breaking Free: Trusting God Over Our Need for Control

Breaking Free from the Illusion of Control

As I sit in circles of chairs or gather around tables in Bible studies, I’m struck by the frequency of two words: control and perfection. Yet, from the same mouths, I hear whispers of anxiety, stress, fear, and exhaustion. The paradox is jarring. How can we possibly believe we’re in control when, in reality, we’re not?

The Elusive Dream of Perfection

We strive for perfection, demanding it of ourselves and others, as if it’s within our grasp. But it’s a mirage, a fleeting dream that vanishes upon closer inspection. And what does this pursuit of control and perfection bring us? Anxiety, fear, and a sense of helplessness. It’s a vicious cycle that drains our energy and steals our peace.

The Sovereignty of God

The truth is, God is the only one who truly has control. He is a Sovereign God, perfect in every way. When we acknowledge this reality, we can finally let go of the reins and trust Him fully. We can release the burden of control and perfection, and in return, we’ll experience freedom.

Freedom from Fear and Anxiety

When we walk in freedom, the result of fully trusting God, fear and anxiety lose their grip on us. We’re no longer bound by the chains of control, and our hearts are free to soar. But it’s hard to let go, isn’t it? We cling to the illusion of control, as if God isn’t capable of handling our lives.

Trusting God, Not Ourselves

Proverbs 3:5 reminds us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.” Why is it so difficult to trust God fully? He has a hold of our lives, far better than we do. When we yield to Him, we gain freedom. The question is, will we choose control or freedom? They cannot coexist. Let’s opt for freedom, trusting God to guide us every step of the way.
