When Bullies Seem to Win: Finding Hope in God’s Patience and Power

When the Bullies Seem to Win

Have you ever felt the sting of bullying? Maybe someone called you names, pushed you around, or took something that belonged to you. It’s a painful and humiliating experience, leaving you feeling helpless and wondering why.

A Lesson from History

The children of Israel knew this feeling all too well. Their powerful Assyrian neighbors had invaded their territory, seized their king, and deported most of the nation into exile (2 Kings 17). It seemed like the bullies had won. But the prophet Nahum brought a message of hope, reminding the Jews that God was still in control, even in the midst of chaos.

God’s Patience and Power

Nahum assured the Israelites that God had the power to fix the situation instantly, but He was choosing to be patient. Why? Because King Hoshea had done evil in God’s eyes, and the Assyrians were helping God get Israel’s attention. This was tough news to swallow, but God wanted His people to turn back to Him.

Justice Will Come

Nahum also declared that God would bring justice to everyone who was guilty – eventually. But because of His loving kindness, He often withholds judgment, hoping that people will repent. When we face hardship, we might ask, “What is God teaching me here, and how can I, like Him, be patient and merciful towards my enemies?”

A Lesson for Today

As Paul wrote, “Do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance, and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?” (Romans 2:4). When we’re facing bullying or hardship, we can ask God to help us see His purpose in our affliction. We can pray for the strength to show loving kindness towards our enemies, just as God does, in the hope that they might turn to Him.

A Prayer for Perseverance

Dear God, sometimes I wonder why my enemies seem to have the upper hand and beat me down. Help me see Your purpose in affliction, and remember that You wait patiently for everyone to acknowledge Your Lordship. May I show the same loving kindness towards my enemies, that I may draw some to You. Amen.
