Finding Courage in God’s Presence: Overcoming Fear with Faith

Embracing Courage in the Face of Fear

The Book of Joshua begins with a poignant reminder: Moses, one of the greatest leaders in history, has passed on. The LORD then turns to Joshua, entrusting him with the monumental task of leading the people into the promised land. It’s easy to imagine the weight of responsibility and fear that came with filling Moses’ shoes.

A Command to Courage

The LORD’s words to Joshua are both reassuring and commanding: “Be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9). This instruction is repeated throughout the chapter, emphasizing its importance. The LORD is not suggesting that Joshua be brave; He is issuing a direct command. And yet, Joshua is still afraid, needing constant reassurance from the LORD.

Courage in the Face of Fear

We often assume that courageous individuals are fearless, but the truth is that courage is the ability to act in spite of fear. The dictionary defines courage as “the ability to do something that frightens you” or “strength in the face of pain or grief.” Joshua’s story teaches us that even in the midst of fear, we can find the strength to be courageous.

The Promise of God’s Presence

The LORD’s promise to Joshua is also a promise to us: “I will be with you as I was with Moses. I will not fail or abandon you” (Joshua 1:5). This promise is the foundation of our courage. When we obey God’s instructions and study His Word, we can trust that He will be with us, guiding and empowering us.

Trusting in God’s Faithfulness

The LORD’s closing words to Joshua are a reminder to us all: “Do not be afraid or discouraged” (Joshua 1:9). We can trust in God’s faithfulness, knowing that He will never leave us or forsake us. His presence is our reason to be courageous, even in the face of uncertainty and fear.

A Prayer for Courage

Dear LORD, thank you for promising to be with us wherever we go. Help us to study your Word and obey your instructions, even when it’s difficult. Remind us of your faithfulness and give us the courage to trust in you. Amen.
