The Power of Humility in the Christian Life
As followers of Jesus, we’re called to emulate His character, and humility is a crucial aspect of that. In a society that often celebrates self-promotion and ambition, embracing humility can be a radical departure from the norm.
The Humility of Jesus
Jesus, the ultimate example of humility, demonstrated its power in His life and ministry. He came to earth with a singular focus on serving others, rather than seeking to exalt Himself. This selflessness is a hallmark of true humility.
Characteristics of Humility
So, what does humility look like in practice? According to Philippians 2:3-4, humility is other-focused, prioritizing the needs of others above our own. It doesn’t grasp for rights and privileges, even when they’re rightfully ours (Phil. 2:6-7). Instead, humility willingly serves others, just as Jesus did during His time on earth (Phil. 2:7). Ultimately, humility obeys God, even when it’s difficult or unpopular (Phil. 2:8).
A Counter-Cultural Mindset
In a world that often equates humility with weakness, we’re called to adopt a counter-cultural mindset. We must recognize that true strength lies not in self-promotion, but in the ability to deny ourselves and put others first. This requires supernatural power, which only the Holy Spirit can provide.
A Sign of Christ’s Life in Us
Rather than being a sign of weakness, humility is actually a testament to the transformative power of Christ’s life in us. As we yield to the Holy Spirit, He empowers us to live out this humble mindset, reflecting the character of Jesus in our daily lives.
A Call to Action
So, let’s commit to cultivating humility in our own lives. Let’s seek to prioritize others, surrender our rights and privileges, and obey God, even when it’s hard. As we do, we’ll discover the true power of humility and the freedom that comes from living a life that’s centered on Christ, not self.
