The Power of Today: A Choice to Follow Jesus
As we reflect on the journey of the Israelites in the wilderness, we’re reminded of their rebellion against God after the Exodus from Egypt. Their lack of trust in God’s provision and care led to a hardened heart, a condition that can still afflict us today.
The Struggle with Sin
Living as disciples of Jesus is a daily challenge. The constant battle with sin can lead to a gradual hardening of our hearts, causing us to doubt God’s goodness. Sin promises us fleeting satisfaction, but it ultimately leaves us empty and unfulfilled. We may rationalize our sinful choices, thinking we can repent tomorrow, but the Bible reminds us that there’s no such thing as past-tense or future-tense discipleship.
The Urgency of Today
The book of Hebrews emphasizes the importance of today, repeatedly urging us to listen to God’s voice in the present moment. “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts” (Hebrews 4:7). If we harden our hearts today, what guarantee do we have that we’ll listen tomorrow? Every day presents an opportunity to choose between listening to God’s voice and ignoring it.
The Power of Community
As we navigate the ups and downs of life, we need each other to stay on track. We can encourage one another to keep following Jesus, even when the road ahead seems uncertain. Surrounding ourselves with fellow believers who share our commitment to Christ can provide the support and accountability we need to stay the course.
A Prayer for Today
Dear heavenly Father, I choose to follow you today. Keep my heart soft and sensitive to your voice. Bring other believers into my life to encourage me, and may I be an encouragement to those around me to keep seeking you. Amen.
