When Plans Fail: Trusting God in the Unknown

Embracing the Unpredictable

As I reflect on my recent trip to Nepal, I am reminded that even the best-laid plans can go awry. My husband, Mike, and I were thrilled to accept an invitation to speak about marriage at several churches in Nepal. After weeks of meticulous planning, we were confident that every detail had been covered. But little did I know, fate had other plans.

The Unexpected Twist

Before boarding the plane, I had unknowingly contracted a virus that would soon wreak havoc on my body. As we soared through the skies, my knees and ankles began to swell, making every movement a struggle. Despite seeking medical attention at an international clinic, I was told that all I could do was wait for the virus to run its course, relying on high doses of ibuprofen to alleviate the discomfort.

A Humbling Experience

This experience forced me to confront the age-old question: “How can all things work together for good?” It seemed logical that God would want me to be healthy and strong to fulfill His purposes. Yet, in my weakened state, I was humbled to discover that God could still use me in profound ways.

The Power of Trust

As I navigated this challenging situation, I was reminded that no matter how much we plan and prepare, our lives are ultimately in God’s hands. We can try to control every aspect of our journey, but ultimately, it is God who orchestrates the events of our lives.

A Prayer for Trust

Father, help me to trust you with the difficulties I face today, and to believe that your goodness is at work, even when it doesn’t feel good to me. Amen.

In the end, it is not about our own strength or abilities, but about surrendering to God’s sovereignty and trusting that He will bring good out of even the most trying circumstances.
