Unwavering Devotion: A Promise to Cherish
When I exchanged vows with my 19-year-old sweetheart at the tender age of 20, I had no idea that the commitment I made would be tested by the uncertainties of life. Standing before our loved ones, I pledged to love and cherish her until death do us part. But deep down, I knew that I couldn’t guarantee a future filled with ups and downs.
A Promise That Transcends Human Limitations
God, however, is different. He makes promises and keeps them, no matter what. Jesus, in his infinite wisdom, assures us that he will prepare a place for us and return to take us to be with him (John 14:1-4). Recognizing our frailty, he also promised to send a Helper, the Holy Spirit, to guide and comfort us.
The Seal of God’s Promise
The Holy Spirit is our teacher, testifying with our spirit that we are indeed God’s children (Romans 8:1). This seal of promise is more binding than any written contract. It’s a guarantee that God will fulfill his promise to us, no matter what the future holds.
Clinging to God’s Promise
Thirty-nine years have passed since I made that promise to my beloved. We’re still holding on to each other, and more importantly, to God’s promise. In times of doubt, we cling to the assurance of the Holy Spirit, who reminds us of God’s compassion and understanding.
A Prayer of Gratitude
“Lord Jesus, thank you for your unwavering compassion and understanding our weak faith. We need the Spirit of Truth to assure us of all your promises. Amen.”
