Finding Comfort in the Everlasting Arms
When tragedy strikes, it’s natural to question God’s presence and purpose. Susan’s heartbreaking experience of losing her first child at birth led her to feelings of anger and resentment towards God. She wondered, “Where was God when I needed Him?” This sentiment is echoed in the cries of many who have faced unimaginable loss and pain.
A Refuge in Times of Need
Yet, in the midst of sorrow, we are reminded of God’s promise to be our refuge and strength. As Deuteronomy 33:27 (LB) says, “The eternal God is your Refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” This promise is echoed in 2 Chronicles 32:8 (KJV), “…with us is the Lord our God to help us, and to fight our battles.” In times of uncertainty, we can find comfort in knowing that God is always present, even when we can’t feel His presence.
A Lesson in Trust
I recall a powerful response to a similar question: “Where was God when I lost my son?” The answer: “Where He was when His own Son died on the cross for our sins.” This poignant reminder highlights the mystery of God’s ways, but also His unwavering love and commitment to us. We may not understand why tragedy occurs, but we can trust that God is always working for our good.
A Testimony of Faith
A godly Christian leader, who had recently lost his son to suicide, exemplified this trust in the midst of unspeakable pain. Despite his devastation, he proclaimed, “I know I can trust God. He is a loving God, my refuge, and I feel His strength and compassion and care for me and my loved ones.” This remarkable display of faith is a testament to the power of trusting in God’s eternal arms.
Bible Reading: Psalm 91:1-7
Today’s Thought:
As I reflect on God’s promise to be my refuge, I will make a conscious effort to visualize those everlasting arms of love spread out beneath me, ready to catch me in times of need. This mental image will give me courage in the face of obstacles and assurance despite my weaknesses. Will you join me in this exercise of faith?
Psalm 91:1-7
Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare
and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
You will not fear the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday.
A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
