The Ultimate Challenge of Following Jesus
As a devoted disciple of Jesus, I’ve identified a persistent obstacle that hinders my ability to embody humility. This formidable foe has been a lifelong companion, manifesting as self-centered tendencies that have been present since birth. To genuinely follow Christ, I’ve come to realize that I must deliberately defy and deny the inherent inclination towards self.
The Sobering Criteria for Discipleship
In Mark 8, Jesus clearly outlines the uncompromising requirements for following Him. To truly be His disciple, one must deny self, take up their cross, and surrender their life to ultimately save it. At first glance, this declaration may seem unreasonable and unattainable. However, the crux of the matter lies in the fact that self and Christ cannot coexist as rulers of our hearts. One must submit to the other.
The Battle for Supremacy
The human heart is inherently inclined towards self-preservation and self-promotion, which directly conflicts with unconditional submission to God’s will. This internal struggle is a lifelong challenge that every believer must confront. Denying self allows God to edify and sanctify us, transforming us into credible witnesses to a fallen world that excessively values self.
A Daily Resolve
Wrestling with and denying self is never easy, but it is the necessary cost of following Jesus. A daily, intentional decision to realign our hearts to prioritize God’s will is essential for authentic discipleship. By immersing ourselves in God’s Word, we can allow Him to renew our minds, transform our perspectives, and influence our will.
A Life Severed from Self
As we surrender to God’s will, we can experience a life that genuinely reflects Jesus. It is a life characterized by humility, selflessness, and a deep commitment to following Christ. May we daily pray for the strength to defy and deny self, realigning our hearts and wills to reflect the character of Jesus.
A Prayer for Surrender
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for the privilege of following You. Help me to defy and deny self, realigning my heart and will to prioritize Your will for my life. As I immerse myself in Your Word, renew my mind, transform my heart, and empower me to authentically reflect Jesus to those around me. Amen.
