Embracing the Uncomfortable Truth
A Foundation of Wisdom
The words of Matthew 7:24-25 offer a powerful reminder: “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” This biblical principle emphasizes the importance of building our lives on a solid foundation of wisdom.
The Conflict of Desire and Truth
However, we often encounter an inconvenient truth that challenges our desires and plans, stirring up feelings of discomfort. Despite our emotions, truth remains unchanged. For instance, an impatient teenager may resent the fact that they cannot legally drive until a certain age, while an aging adult may struggle with the physical limitations that come with age. Our minds can make commitments that our bodies cannot keep.
Spiritual Inconvenient Truths
Spiritually, we also face inconvenient truths. The Bible consistently communicates that those who follow God’s wisdom will experience His blessings and stand firm against life’s storms. Yet, we often blame God when we disregard His wisdom and face consequences. A poignant example is the individual who was angry with God after being charged with a DUI for drinking and driving. They wondered why God didn’t give them a break. However, God’s commandment is clear: “Don’t drink too much wine, for many evils lie along that path” (Ephesians 5:18 TLB).
God’s Love and Protection
God gives us His commands for two positive reasons: to protect us and provide for us. He loves us! The inconvenient truth is that God is not at fault when we disregard His wisdom. Instead, we should recognize that His commands are designed to shield us from harm and guide us towards a life of purpose.
A Prayer for Strength
Dear Father, I know you are good and you do love me. I want to trust you, and do what you ask. Please give me the strength to resist temptation. I want to apply your wisdom to my life and be like the person whose life is built on the rock. Amen.
Discovering God’s Wisdom
As we navigate life’s challenges, let us remember to build our foundation on the rock of God’s wisdom. By doing so, we can experience His blessings and stand firm against the storms of life.
