When God Feels Distant: Holding On to Faith

The Unseen Hand

As a child, I experienced a terrifying moment of disconnection. During a chaotic shopping trip to the mall, I let go of my mother’s hand, and suddenly, I was lost in a sea of strangers. The cacophony of sounds and the towering racks of clothes made me feel tiny and alone. It was as if my heart was racing for the first time. Panic set in, and tears pricked at the corners of my eyes.

The Familiar Feeling of Fear

Years later, as an adult, I’ve encountered similar feelings of abandonment, albeit in different circumstances. It’s as if I’m no longer holding onto God’s hand. The sense of loss is overwhelming, and my heart pounds in my chest. I’m left gasping for air, wondering, “Where are you, God?” “Why have you forsaken me?”

A Promise to Abide

But just as my mother found me in that crowded mall, God always reassures me of His presence. Scripture reminds us that our Lord will never leave us, promising to be with us until the end of time (Matthew 28:20). When we invite Jesus into our lives, His Holy Spirit takes up residence within us, as Peter declared in Acts 2:38. Even when we don’t feel His presence, we can trust that He’s always there, just like our heartbeat continues even when we’re not aware of it.

Comfort in the Dark

If you’re feeling lost and alone right now, take heart. Jesus is with you, even when you don’t sense His presence. Call out to the Holy Spirit to comfort and guide you. He’ll grasp your hand, just as my mother did all those years ago. You can count on it.

A Prayer of Trust

Dear Lord, thank you for being my constant companion, even when I don’t feel Your nearness. Help me to always feel comfortable calling out to the Holy Spirit for guidance and protection. Amen.
