The Unwavering Standard of True Worship
In the book of Malachi, the Lord rebukes His people for offering Him lame and sick animals as sacrifices. “When you offer animals that are lame or sick, is that not evil?” He asks (Malachi 1:8). It’s a powerful reminder that our worship must always be characterized by excellence.
A Sacrifice Unworthy of a King
Imagine presenting a broken, inferior gift to a governor or a king. Would they accept it? Of course not! Yet, we often try to offer God our second-best, our leftovers, or even our rejects. We rationalize that He will understand, that He will be pleased with our efforts regardless of their quality. But God is not just any king; He is the Great King, and His name will be feared among the nations (Malachi 1:14).
The Supreme Test of True Worship
Throughout history, customs and traditions have changed, but one thing remains constant: true worship requires our best. Not just on Sundays, but every day. Our best intentions, our best devotion, our best offerings. Anything less is not worship at all. It’s a sobering thought, but one that can revolutionize our relationship with God.
The Little Drummer Boy’s Example
Remember the classic Christmas carol about the Little Drummer Boy? “I am a poor boy too. / I have no gift to bring / That’s fit to give our King. / Shall I play for you? / I played my drum for Him. / I played my best for Him.” This humble boy understood the principle of true worship. He didn’t have much to offer, but he gave his best, and that’s all that mattered.
A Challenge to Excellence
So, what is the best that we can bring to God? It’s a question we must each answer for ourselves. The Holy Spirit can guide us as we seek to understand what it means to offer our best to the Lord. Will you take up the challenge to worship God with excellence, to give Him your best every day? The promise is clear: when we do, He will be pleased with us.
A Prayer of Dedication
Lord, you are not only my Great King but my Great Savior. I promise to serve you always with the best of all I have and am. Amen.
