A Galactic Perspective on Peace on Earth
As two extraterrestrial beings converse in the vastness of space, they ponder the state of humanity. One remarks, “The dominant life forms on Earth have developed satellite-based weapons.” The other asks, “Are they an emerging intelligence?” The first responds, “I don’t think so… They have them aimed at themselves.” This humorous anecdote takes a somber turn, revealing a disturbing truth about our planet.
War and Strife: A Global Reality
As we approach the season of peace on Earth, we’re reminded that true peace remains elusive. Civil wars, international conflicts, and the looming threat of terrorism plague our world. At the root of this chaos lies humanity’s insatiable desire for power and wealth, a curse that has driven us away from the divine.
Rejecting God, Embracing Earthly Power
In 1 Samuel 10:19, we’re told, “You have rejected God… and asked for a king.” This ancient phrase echoes through the ages, highlighting humanity’s tendency to seek earthly power instead of heavenly guidance. Until we shift our focus from temporal authority to eternal wisdom, nothing will change.
Jesus’ Message of Peace
Amidst the turmoil, Jesus’ words offer a beacon of hope. In Matthew 5:9, He declares, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” Later, in Matthew 11:28-30, He invites us to find rest in Him, saying, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
A Peace That Transcends the World
In John 14:27, Jesus promises, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you.” He reiterates this message in John 16:33, assuring us that despite the tribulations of this world, we can find peace in Him.
A Future of Harmony
The prophet Isaiah envisions a world where “they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning-hooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more” (Isaiah 2:4). Though this vision remains unrealized, God’s promise ensures its eventual fulfillment.
Focusing on the True Agent of Peace
As we celebrate the birth of our Savior, let us redirect our attention from the strife-ridden world to the manger that cradled the embodiment of peace on Earth – Jesus Christ. May we seek real, eternal peace, rather than the fleeting promises of humanity.
