The Danger of Judging a Book by Its Cover
Growing up, I had a very specific idea of what it meant to be a Christian. Every Sunday, our church would come together, dressed in our finest attire, with the men sporting ties and the women wearing elegant dresses. The children were always clean and well-behaved, and the entire atmosphere was one of warmth and welcoming smiles. I thought this was what Christianity looked like.
A Narrow View
As I matured, my understanding of faith began to expand. I met people who claimed to follow Christ, yet didn’t fit my initial mold. Some had rougher exteriors, while others didn’t attend church as frequently as I did. Their perspectives on life and faith differed significantly from mine. My image of a Christian began to shift, and I realized I had been judging others based on their appearance.
The Flaw of Self-Righteousness
I took comfort in knowing I fit the idealized image in my mind. However, God revealed to me that this self-righteousness was riddled with flaws. The prophet Samuel taught us that it’s not the outward appearance that determines one’s destiny, but rather the heart. Our God is a creative force who crafted people from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and life experiences to worship Him.
Unity in Diversity
Followers of Christ may appear vastly different, but our hearts beat with the same love for God. I’ve come to understand that my initial perception was limited and misguided. God, forgive me for judging others’ faith based on their outward appearance. Help me see people through Your eyes.
A Call to Reflection
Do you find yourself judging others based on how they look or act? Take a moment to ask God to reveal areas where you can shift your thinking. By doing so, you’ll begin to see people as He does – with love, compassion, and understanding.
Love Your Neighbor
Embracing this new perspective allows us to extend grace to others, just as God extends it to us. Let’s strive to be patient, kind, and more than helpful to those around us. As we do, we’ll come to realize that love is not about appearances, but about the heart.
