The Deception of False Teachers
A Warning from Scripture
Matthew 7:15-16 cautions us against false teachers who disguise themselves as harmless sheep but are actually wolves in sheep’s clothing, waiting to tear us apart. These deceitful individuals can be identified by their actions, just as a tree is known by its fruit. We must be vigilant in recognizing them, lest we confuse grapevines with thorn bushes or figs with thistles.
A Personal Encounter with Deception
I recall a conversation with two students from a prestigious theological seminary, whom I had the privilege of introducing to Christ. When I asked about their impression of a renowned professor, they expressed concern that despite his esteemed reputation, he denied fundamental Christian tenets, including the deity of Christ and the authority of Scripture. Although he presented himself as a brilliant and profound scholar, his teachings were ultimately inconsistent with biblical truth.
The Subtlety of False Teachers
This professor’s story is not an isolated incident. Many false teachers operate in seminaries and pulpits worldwide, masquerading as followers of Jesus Christ while serving another master. They may appear brilliant, loving, and gracious, but they fail to preach the inspired Word of God. Our Lord Jesus Christ aptly described them as wolves disguised as harmless sheep.
The Threefold Test
So, how can we recognize false teachers? The test is threefold:
- Their View of Jesus Christ: Do they acknowledge Him as the Son of God, who died on the cross for our sins and was raised from the dead?
- Their View of Scripture: Do they profess the Bible as the divinely inspired authority of God?
- Their Lifestyle: Do they live consistently with the teachings of Scripture, or do they condone practices that contradict the Word of God?
A Call to Discernment
As we reflect on Matthew 7:13-23, let us ask God to grant us a discerning spirit, enabling us to distinguish between true and false teachers. Let us also instruct fellow believers and non-believers alike to be cautious of false teachers’ influence.
Today’s Action Point
I will meditate on God’s Word, carefully evaluating those who claim to be His followers based on their view of Jesus Christ, their stance on Scripture, and their lifestyle. I will also encourage others to be alert to the presence of false teachers, responding with both grace and truth.
The Question
How will you recognize a false teacher when you encounter one? How will you respond with both grace and truth?
