The Unforgiving Message
As I strolled through the woods, crossed the creek, and made my way along a field and by the small lake, I was lost in thought. Suddenly, a teenage boy caught my attention. His bright red t-shirt stood out against the serene backdrop, and as he drew closer, I couldn’t help but notice the words emblazoned on the front. The top line, in bold white letters, read: “Great!” My initial reaction was one of relief – he’s a Christian, I thought to myself.
A Bold Proclamation
But as he drew nearer, my eyes widened in shock. The words printed underneath, in even larger black letters, left me reeling. I couldn’t fathom the depth of anger and bitterness that would drive someone to wear such a bold, unforgiving message. Did people often ask him about the story behind those words? Who was it that he refused to forgive? What had happened to him at such a tender age to leave such a lasting impact?
A Heartfelt Reaction
My heart felt heavy as I pondered the pain he must have endured. My mind raced with scenarios, trying to make sense of it all. But I knew I would never know his story, never understand the full extent of his hurt. All I could do was hope that one day, he would find it in his heart to forgive.
The Power of Forgiveness
The first line of his t-shirt resonated deeply with me: “God forgives.” It’s a powerful reminder that forgiveness is not only possible but also necessary for our own freedom and healing. As Jesus taught Peter, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven” (Matthew 18:21-22). Forgiveness is not a one-time act, but a continuous process.
A Message of Hope
I hope that young man will one day create a new t-shirt, one that declares: “I forgive.” Until then, I’ll hold onto the hope that he will find peace and release from the burden of unforgiveness. May we all learn to forgive, just as God forgives us.
