Humble Hearts: The Power of Asking for Help in Prayer

The Humility of Asking for Help

I still remember the day my mobile phone crashed, and I had to borrow my wife’s old phone as a temporary replacement. As I struggled to get familiar with the new device, I encountered a feature that neither my wife nor I could figure out, despite our best efforts. Our 7-year-old son, who was watching us with great interest, offered to help us multiple times, but we ignored his suggestions, thinking we could solve the problem on our own.

A Child’s Wisdom

It wasn’t until we were frustrated and exhausted that we finally handed the phone over to our son. To our surprise, he solved the problem in just a few minutes! As we praised and thanked him, he made a profound statement that struck a chord in my heart: “The problem with you two is that you never ask for my help.” His words were a gentle reminder that sometimes, we adults can be just as stubborn and prideful, trying to tackle our problems alone without seeking guidance from a higher power.

The Power of Prayer

Jesus reminds us in John 16:24, “Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.” Yet, how often do we forget to turn to Him in prayer, relying instead on our own strength and abilities? We try every possible solution, only to end up disappointed and frustrated. Today, let us remember that Jesus is always willing to help us. He invites us to call upon Him, promising to answer our prayers (Jeremiah 33:3).

Three Essential Steps

So, what can we do when faced with challenging situations?

  1. Turn it over to the Lord in prayer, trusting that He is able and willing to help us.
  2. Have faith that He is strong enough to deliver us from our struggles, just as Hebrews 11:1 reminds us, “Faith shows the reality of what we hope for” (NLT).
  3. Testify of His goodness when the answer comes, giving thanks and praise for His faithfulness.

The Peace We Often Forfeit

As Joseph Scriven so eloquently put it, “O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, All because we do not carry Everything to God in prayer.” May we learn to humble ourselves, asking for help when we need it, and trusting in the Lord’s goodness and mercy to guide us through life’s challenges.
