Finding Strength in Struggle: Embracing God’s Purpose

Embracing the Purpose of Struggles

Life is full of ups and downs, and struggles are an inevitable part of our journey. Often, we’re left wondering why we have to face such challenges. The Bible offers guidance on how to approach these difficulties, and James’ words provide valuable insight.

Finding Joy in the Midst of Trials

James encourages us to “consider it all joy” when we encounter various trials (James 1:2). This may seem counterintuitive, but he explains that the testing of our faith produces perseverance (James 1:3). So, does this mean we should strive to struggle better? The answer lies in verse 4: “Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

The Reason Behind Our Struggles

It’s clear that our struggles serve a purpose – to help us grow and mature. As we persevere, we become more complete and lacking nothing. This realization gives meaning to our struggles and helps us find the strength to push through.

The Reward of Perseverance

In verse 12, James reveals the reward for those who persevere under trial: “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.” What a wonderful promise!

Conducting Ourselves Worthy of the Gospel

In Philippians 1:27-30, we’re reminded to conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. We’re called to stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel, without being frightened by those who oppose us. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but we will be saved – and that by God.

Prayer for Strength

As we face struggles, let us pray: “Heavenly Father, whatever happens, we are committed to conducting ourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. We will stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel without being frightened in any way by those who oppose us. We do this as a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that we will be saved – and that by you our God. For it has been granted to us on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him… In Jesus’ name, amen.”
