Finding Peace in Turbulent Times
Have you ever felt the urge to escape from the chaos of life? To flee to a distant land and leave your troubles behind? You’re not alone. In the beloved children’s book, Alexander and the Horrible, Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, the protagonist dreams of running away to Australia. My husband and I often joke about doing the same, but we know it’s not a viable solution to our problems.
A Lesson from Israel’s History
The ancient Israelites faced a similar dilemma. Threatened by their enemies, they were consumed by fear and anxiety. Instead of waiting for God to intervene, they sought refuge in their own strength, relying on their swift horses to save them. But God had a different plan. Through the prophet Isaiah, He urged them to turn back to Him, promising that “in repentance and rest is your salvation; in quietness and trust is your strength” (Isaiah 30:15).
The Power of Repentance, Rest, Quiet, and Trust
These four words resonate deeply with me. They go against our natural instincts, yet offer a sense of calm in the midst of turmoil. To experience this peace, I must be willing to surrender to God’s will, no matter what the future holds. It’s a difficult task, but one that yields rich rewards. When I wait for God, I encounter His grace, compassion, and justice.
A Call to Reflection
Do you need to repent of any sin that’s holding you back from resting in God’s presence? Is there an area of your life where you’re struggling to trust quietly in His will? Take a moment to reflect on these questions. Ask God to help you wait for Him to act in the challenges you’re facing today.
A Prayer for Strength
Sovereign Lord, I choose not to run away from my problems. Instead, I need Your grace, compassion, and justice in a big way today. Help me to wait for You to act, even when it’s hard. Amen.
