Breaking Free from Pride and Prejudice: A Path to Humility

The Blinding Effects of Pride and Prejudice

When we deceive ourselves into thinking we’re something we’re not, we set ourselves up for a world of hurt. As Galatians 6:3-5 reminds us, each individual should examine their own actions and take pride in their accomplishments without comparing themselves to others. After all, we each have our own unique load to carry in life.

The Classic Tale of Misunderstanding

The timeless story of Jane Austen’s classic novel comes to mind, where personal pride and prejudice wreak havoc on relationships. When these two attributes collide, it’s a recipe for disaster. We often find ourselves pointing fingers at others instead of acknowledging our own shortcomings. It’s human nature to shift the blame, thinking that if only circumstances were different, we’d be truly happy.

The Reality Check

My father’s wise words ring true: there are only two kinds of people in this world – saved sinners and unsaved sinners. This means no one has the right to judge others, as we’re all in the same sinful state apart from God’s salvation. As Romans 3:23 says, we’ve all fallen short of God’s glory. Comparing ourselves to others only leads to unhealthy pride and prejudice, which can come across as judgmental.

Carrying Our Own Load

Rather than focusing on what others are or aren’t doing, we should be proud of ourselves when we’re faithful in each task God has given us. We each have our own “load” to carry, and it’s time to take responsibility for our own actions. Father God, help us to focus on our own issues and stop comparing ourselves with others around us. Our self-worth is built on being your children and honoring you with what we do and say.

A Prayer for Humility

Today, when you catch yourself being critical of someone else, acknowledge this to God and ask him to give you his eyes to see that person as he sees them. Let’s learn to love and accept others as God has made them, just as he loves and accepts us with all our faults. Amen.
