Breaking Free from Darkness
As followers of Jesus, we’re called to leave the shadows behind and walk in the light. But what does that mean when darkness seems to surround us? How do we resist its pull when discouragement and negativity try to drag us down?
The Power of Choice
We have a choice: to walk in the light of Jesus or to succumb to the darkness. God’s Spirit empowers us to demonstrate qualities like joy, gentleness, patience, peace, self-control, and faithfulness. But we must choose to use these gifts.
The Temptation of Darkness
It’s easy to get caught up in negative thoughts, critical conversations, and selfish behaviors. These may seem harmless, but they can lead us away from God’s light. We must recognize when we’re opening doors to darkness and ask for God’s help to close them.
Tools for Living in the Light
God provides us with tools to overcome darkness. The first is to declare His praises. When doubts and discouragement creep in, intentionally turn to thank God for His presence in your life. Acknowledge Him as your Rock, Strength, and Shepherd.
The second tool is to expose the darkness. Recognize when you’re engaging in unfruitful works of darkness, such as negative entertainment or critical thoughts. Ask God to help you close those doors and refocus on thanksgiving.
Walking in the Light
Once darkness is exposed to the light, it cannot remain. Find others to walk with in the light of Jesus’ presence. Pray for God’s help to live consistently in His light, and ask Him to nudge you when discouragement and temptation come.
A Prayer for Living in the Light
“Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for calling me into Your light. Help me to live there consistently. When discouragement and temptation come, nudge me to turn to You and praise You. Help me to refocus on the help and strength of Your Holy Spirit. Thank you that Your Light fills my life with peace, joy, and strength.”
Reflection
Is discouragement or temptation pulling you down? Take a moment to thank God for His wonderful presence. When you feel darkness crowding your soul, ask what door you may have opened to unfruitful works of darkness. Pay attention to your thoughts and the things you allow into your mind. Ask for God’s help in closing those doors so that you may remain in His light and walk peacefully and joyfully in His presence.
