The True Cost of Following Christ
Jesus’ words in Luke 9:23 are a stark reminder of the requirements for being his disciple. To follow Christ is to embark on a journey that demands sacrifice, self-denial, and a willingness to surrender one’s life.
Renouncing Personal Comfort
Discipleship is not about seeking personal gain or glory. Rather, it’s about renouncing selfish desires and embracing a life of service to others. As Paul so eloquently put it, “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ, who lives in me” (Galatians 2:20). This daily death to self brings a sense of freedom and purpose that the world cannot offer.
The Idol of Autonomy
In today’s society, autonomy is often idolized. We crave the power and freedom to make our own decisions, to be our own bosses. But God’s kingdom operates on different principles. Jesus’ teachings turn the world upside-down, revealing that true life is found in surrender, not self-assertion. As he said, “Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it” (Matthew 10:39).
A Life of Abundant Joy
This daily surrender may seem daunting, but it leads to a life of abundant joy and fulfillment. The temporary pleasures of this world pale in comparison to the deep satisfaction that comes from knowing Jesus. As we surrender our lives to him, we discover a sense of purpose and belonging that transcends the fleeting nature of earthly desires.
A Prayer for Surrender
Holy God, thank you for saving me through your Son. May I daily die to sin — pride, anger, lust, greed, envy, and discontent. May I live for you alone, surrendering my life to your will and purposes. Amen.
