God’s Unfinished Masterpiece: Embracing Perfection in Progress

The Unfinished Masterpiece: A Reflection of God’s Work in Our Lives

Saint John the Divine, a majestic Manhattan landmark, stands as a testament to the power of perseverance. Begun in 1892, this grand cathedral remains unfinished, its nickname “Saint John the Unfinished” a poignant reminder of the obstacles that can hinder even the most ambitious projects. Over the past century, financial struggles, labor disputes, engineering setbacks, wars, and fires have all contributed to the cathedral’s incomplete state.

The Parallels of Life and Construction

As I reflect on my own spiritual journey, I am reminded of the parallels between the cathedral’s unfinished state and our own lives as followers of Christ. We, too, are works in progress, shaped by the Master Architect’s plan. Yet, we often encounter obstacles that can slow our transformation. Disagreement and discouragement can bring our growth to a standstill, causing us to question God’s plan or our own abilities.

The Roots of Disagreement and Discouragement

Disagreement arises when we fail to trust God’s plan, instead insisting on our own way. It stems from a lack of faith, a sense of mistrust, or unmet desires. On the other hand, discouragement sets in when we focus on our failures or the slow pace of change. In these moments, we may feel like giving up, but God’s gentle reminder is, “Be patient, I’m not finished yet.”

Comfort in the Unfinished State

As believers, it is comforting to know that our Architect is all-wise, all-powerful, and possesses unlimited resources. His ultimate goal is to conform us to the image of His Son, Jesus Christ (Romans 8:29). He has gifted us with the mind of Christ and the Spirit of Christ, yet we often struggle to reflect His character. Could it be that we are engaged in a labor dispute of our own, resisting God’s plan and purposes?

A Prayer of Surrender

Father, thank you for your work in my life. You are good, and I know in my heart that you love me and have the best plan. Yet, at times, I doubt and become fearful, discouraged, or angry. I confess my failure to trust you. Thank you for being faithful to your plan and your commitment to conform me to the image of your Son. Amen.
