Embracing the Freedom of Discipleship
Jesus’ call to discipleship is an invitation to freedom. It’s a summons to leave behind the burdens of self-definition and entrust our lives to Him. In Luke 9:23, Jesus says, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” This verse is not a prescription for a life of drudgery, but a pathway to liberation.
The Privilege of Becoming Life-Apprentices
In the first century, becoming a disciple meant asking a teacher to form one’s entire heart and life. Jesus extends this invitation to “all,” regardless of their background or status. He welcomes those who are spiritually dull, self-centered, and susceptible to flawed understandings of Him. His offer is ongoing, despite our deep need.
Freedom from Self-Definition
When Jesus calls us to self-denial, He frees us from the pressure of defining ourselves. We no longer have to rely on our successes, failures, experiences, or abilities to determine our worth. Instead, we can entrust that role to Him. By denying ourselves, we’re not hiding our true selves; we’re surrendering our need to control and define our lives.
The Freedom of Self-Denial
Self-denial is not about suppressing our desires or pretending to be someone we’re not. It’s about recognizing that our identity is not defined by our achievements or possessions. When we deny ourselves, we’re saying, “Jesus, I am not the most important person in my life. You are.” This freedom allows us to stop trying to prove ourselves and instead, rest in His acceptance.
Taking Up Our Cross Daily
Jesus’ call to take up our cross daily is not about embracing pain or shame. It’s about courageous confidence in His goodness. We’re safer in His hands than in our own. By taking up our cross, we’re saying, “Jesus, I trust You with my life, even when it’s hard.”
A Life of Resurrection Joy
Being joined to Jesus in discipleship means that one day we’ll share in His resurrection life. This destiny is so glorious that it’s worth enduring daily struggles to attain it. As we follow Jesus, we’ll experience fulness of life and love forever.
Conclusion
Jesus’ call to discipleship is an offer of freedom, not a prescription for duty. By embracing this freedom, we can live a life of courage, confidence, and joy. Why wouldn’t we want to accept this offer and help others hear it and heed it as well?
