Beyond the Mundane: Unlocking the Power of Missional Motherhood

The Power of Missional Motherhood: A Calling Beyond the Mundane

As mothers, we often find ourselves caught up in the daily routine of caring for our children, managing our households, and trying to keep everything running smoothly. But what if we told you that there’s more to motherhood than just a list of to-dos? What if we told you that motherhood is a strategic ministry designed by God to call people to worship Him?

A Calling for All Women

According to Gloria Furman, author of Missional Motherhood, mothering is not just for women who have biological or adopted children. It’s a calling for all women to make disciples of all nations. Every Christian woman is called to spiritual motherhood, and our nurturing is, by nature, missional.

Living in Light of Christ’s Resurrection

As mothers, we have the opportunity to live out God’s story of redemption in our daily lives. We can offer the message of the gospel to those around us, and be a source of hope and light in a dark world. As Furman says, “To live in light of Christ’s resurrection is to be so heavenly minded that we are of immense earthly good.”

The Gospel is Not Just Good Advice

The gospel is not just good advice for moms; it’s life-giving news. It’s the power of God that transforms us from the inside out, giving us new hearts and a new perspective on life. As Furman says, “What God commissions, he sees through to the end. He will not forsake us in the work he has given us.”

Nurturing as Intervention

As mothers, we have the opportunity to intervene in the lives of those around us, stepping between them and destructive habits, discouragement, or neglect. This is not just a task for mothers, but for all Christians. As Furman says, “Every kind of nurturing work is an intervention of sorts… This has been our story since the fall. Not a single one of us has any hope apart from God’s gracious intervention.”

Strengthened by Grace

As mothers, we need to be strengthened by grace to make the necessary sacrifices and to do the mundane, routine things that move the gospel forward. We need to boast in our weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon us. As Furman says, “We want Christ’s power to be made perfect through us weak moms.”

A Season of Life in Christ

As mothers, we are in a season of life in Christ, and this season will last forever. We are called to live out our faith in every aspect of our lives, and to pass on the gospel to the next generation. As Furman says, “Whatever season we are in, and whatever kind of nurturing work we are doing, and however long our season lasts, life in Christ is our new normal. And it will still be thirty trillion years from now.”
